Thailand’s Unusual Cuisines – Bugs’ Delights   by Nur Haryanti

Although not always visually appealing to some, bugs are, in fact, claimed to be delicious by many people who actually are bold enough to try them. The local Thais are known to whip up great tasting bug cuisines, which are easily found on the streets and night markets – all at staggeringly low prices. These dishes are definitely not meant for those with delicate stomach. Either way, love it or hate it!

1. Fried Wasps

These little insects have a nutty and smoky flavor to it so this dish is a good start for those who have never tried eating bugs before. The most commonly found bug dish, fried wasps is also very cheap – about 40 Baht for 100 grams.

2. Wasp Larvae

Wasp Larvae are typically found in Northern Thailand and is white in color. They taste a little like mashed potato and taste even better when dipped in salt. Some of the locals spice the food up with a little chili flakes, which make the whole larvae dish good to be eaten ‘as is’.

3. Stir Fried Rhinoceros Beetle Larvae

These larvae are most commonly known as grubs and contain a good source of protein and nutrients. They are considered to be pests in Thailand as they tend to kill banana trees and palm trees. The larvae are stir-fried to perfection and are very crispy – perfect to be eaten on its own.

4. Fried Scorpions

Known to be a great source of vitamin and several proteins, the stingers and pincers on these baby scorpions are carefully removed before they are fried. They can be eaten fried, roasted or even baked, depending on your preference. Sometimes, these scorpions are also soaked in Whisky to give off a slight alcoholic bitter-ish taste. Eating fried scorpions are like eating popcorns – it’s crispy on the outside and airy on the inside as the internal organs sort of evaporated when they are fried.

5. Fried Crickets

The most commonly found bug dish, Fried Crickets are sold almost everywhere in the streets of Thailand. They can be eaten fried, sautéed, boiled or even roasted. These crickets, when deep-fried, taste very much like pork. Just like with prawns, remove the cricket’s head before putting them into your mouth.
